MuPAD – A Computer Algebra System
MuPad is a computer algebra system, available to download for free. It can be a very useful tool for teaching mathematics at secondary level. Karl Sarnow, pedagogical coordinator of Xplora, tells more.
Who might be interested in MuPAD? Teachers and students of mathematics in secondary schools.
What is MuPAD? MuPAD is a Computer Algebra System (CAS). These programs enable the user to solve mathematics problems on a high level.
What makes it different from other CAS? There exists a light version of MuPAD, which can be distributed free of charge to students and teachers. MuPAD exists for Mac, Windows and Unix/Linux.
Can I give it to my pupils? Yes, even though the program is not published under GPL. There exist two versions of MuPAD: The professional version and the light version. The light version can be given to students and teachers without charge. Nevertheless this version is not free in the sense of GPL.
Where can I get it? Either go direct to the MuPad siteto download MuPad only, for installation on your computer, or download the GI-Knoppix version (which also includes a lot of other tools) from the Xplora resources repository and burn it onto a CDROM. You can then run the software from the CD.

Can I get a full description of the program before trying to use it? Yes, either have a look at the original documentation in German or some shorter documentation in English or in French in PDF format.
Can the program run on Windows or Mac? Yes. There are versions for Windows, Mac and Unix/Linux.
Starting the program
Click on the corresponding icon in the launch bar or issue the command “xmupad” on a command line. An empty window appears.
MuPad behaves like a mathematician answering your questions – just use the cursor to enter commands. You may define functions, ask for solutions to equations, manipulate terms or plot the graphs of functions.

This book explains the basic use of the software package called MuPAD and gives an insight into the power of the system. MuPAD is a so-called com puter algebra system, which is developed mainly by Sciface Software and the MuPAD Research Group of the University of Paderborn in Germany. This introduction addresses mathematicians, engineers, computer scientists, natural scientists and, more generally, all those in need of mathematical com putations for their education or their profession. Generally speaking, this book addresses anybody who wants to use the power of a modern computer algebra package. There are two ways to use a computer algebra system. On the one hand, you may use the mathematical knowledge it incorporates by calling system functions interactively. For example, you can compute symbolic integrals or generate and invert matrices by calling appropriate functions. They comprise the system's mathematical intelligence and may implement sophisticated al gorithms. Chapters 2 through 15 discuss this way of using MuPAD. On the other hand, with the help of MuPAD's programming language, you can easily add functionality to the system by implementing your own algorithms as MuPAD procedures. This is useful for special purpose applications if no ap propriate system functions exist. Chapters 16 through 18 are an introduction to programming in MuPAD.
